Andy Littlewood is contesting the Rochdale parliamentary constituency in the 2017 UK general election
Andy Littlewood, a volunteer community worker who has served as chair of the Tenants and Residents Association of Lower Falinge, is to contest the Rochdale parliamentary election under the banner of Greater Manchester Homeless Voice.
Rough sleeping in England has risen for six years consecutively, more than doubled since 2010 under Tory rule and currently stands at record levels. In major urban areas, such as Rochdale and Manchester, the scale of the problem is most apparent. The issue if further exacerbated by the underfunding of healthcare and education. It is arguably the most visceral and visible failure of government social policy.
The national housing shortage has not only caused an increase in Britain’s literal homeless population—it’s responsible for an unsustainable housing bubble that risks establishing a “homeless” generation as young couples on full time salaries find themselves entirely priced out of the housing market.
Speaking of his candidacy, Andy said, “Everyone has a right to housing where homes are fit for purpose. I am standing as I am passionate about Rochdale and want to make it a better place for all to live.”
As the upcoming general election will likely see the Tories returned to government with an overwhelming majority, parliament needs independent minded contarians who are willing to speak truth to power. Andy will be working over the next four weeks to convince the people of Rochdale that he can be that voice.
He is contesting the election against incumbent MP Simon Danczuk who is standing as an independent following his de-selection and resignation from the Labour Party.
